The Sweden government has announced plans to press its arms laws, days after the worst mass shooting in the country’s history.
The gunman, who killed 10 people himself at an adult education center in Orebro on Tuesday, had four legally legal ownership, three of which were found in school, police said.
The coalition of the central right of Sweden said that it would seek to increase the investigation of arms licenses and restrict access to semi -automatic weapons.
“There are certain types of weapons that are as dangerous that they must only possess for civil purposes as an exception,” said the government.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, on a visit to Latvia, told reporters: “We have to make sure that only appropriate people have weapons in Sweden.”
Sweden Democrats said he agreed with the proposals to amend the law, including greater restrictions on access to semi -automatic weapons.
“The horrible act of violence in Obebro raises several key questions about arms legislation,” the party said in a statement.
The AR-15, a particular style of semi-automatic rifle that is powerful and can transport great magazines, was indicated by the Government as an example of weapons that could be restricted.
The police have not said exactly what weapons were used in the attack, but the AR-15 has been used in many massive shootings in the United States.
They confirmed that several long rifles were found at the attack site in Orebro, along with 10 empty magazines.
According to current Swedish weapons laws, any person over 18 who has no criminal record can request a permit for a semi -automatic shotgun, gun or rifle.
They must justify the police why they need a weapon. People over 20 can request a special dispensation to have a totally automatic weapon.
Around 580,000 Swedes have a weapons license from a population of around 10.5 million, according to the figures of the Swedish station SVT.
A Swiss study of 2017 found that there were about 2.3 million weapons in the hands of civilians in Sweden. That is around 23 weapons per 100 people, compared to 29 in Norway and 120 percent in the US.
To obtain a hunting license in Sweden, a theory and practical test is required. Around 280,000 Swedes have one.
The police have not yet publicly identified the victims of the attack in Orebro, but said they hoped to conclude the identification process and make an ad on Friday.
Among the dead, according to family and community members, were the Syrians who fled the war there as refugees, as well as a bosnium.
The police have not yet said something about the possible reason for the murderer. The members of the Syrian Orthodox community in Orebro told the BBC that they feared it was driven by hate for foreigners.
Sweden has a relatively high level of possession of weapons and crime of weapons, according to European standards, although most weapons are legally property and are used for hunting.
The crime with firearms is mainly associated with gangs, which have also taken the use of pumps to attack each other.
Crime with gang -unrelated firearms is less rare, and Tuesday’s attack was the first shooting at the Nation School and its worst mass shooting. A total of four people died in two school stabbing in 2015 and 2022.
