A federal judge said on Friday that the Trump administration plan would stop temporarily to place thousands of workers in the United States Agency for International Development on Administrative License.
Around 2,200 USAID employees were scheduled to be licensed Friday night at 11:59 pm et, as part of the president Donald TrumpThe efforts to close the independent government agency.
Five hundred USAID workers are already on administrative license, said a lawyer from the United States Department of Justice in the Court.
Judge Carl Nichols, designated from Trump, issued the ruling after listening to the Trump administration arguments and two groups that represent federal workers in the United States District Court in Washington, DC
The groups of workers, the American Foreign Service Association and the US Federation of Government employees, had asked Nichols to order the Trump administration “to immediately cease the actions to close the USAID operations.”
They had argued a presentation of a court on the early Friday that Useid “is suffering an avalanche of unconstitutional and illegal attacks, leaving their workers, contractors, beneficiaries and beneficiaries abandoned in the remains and a global humanitarian crisis in the vigil.”
The Trump administration has “deliberately dismantled the USAID infrastructure” and is “ready for a nearby killing blow,” they wrote.
Nichols said Friday afternoon that he would enter a very limited “temporary” restriction order before midnight aimed at 2,200 USAID workers at risk.
The judge said he has not yet decided if his ruling will terminate the order of elimination of the Trump administration for the 500 employees who have already received it.
During the hearing, Nichols interrogated the lawyer of the Doj Brett Shumate about why the Trump administration needed to place 2,200 USAID workers with such a fast license.
“What is the urgency of this?” The judge asked.
“The president has decided that there is corruption and fraud in USAID,” Shumate replied.
USAID was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy after the approval of the Foreign Assistance Law. Manage foreign aid and carry out a variety of other field missions worldwide.
Foreign aid in recent years has understood approximately 1% of the federal budget and less than 0.33% of GDP, according to a Brookings institution September report.
But, nevertheless, USAID has become an important tarump of Trump and ELON ALMIZCLEthat have accused the agency of being an inexplicable magnet for fraud and corruption.
“Corruption is seen at levels rarely seen before. Closing!” Trump wrote About social truth on Friday morning.
Musk, which leads a radical effort to reduce the size of the government through the so -called Efficiency Department of the White House Government, or Doge, has received credit for dismantling USAID.
“We spent the weekend feeding Usaid in the wooden splinter,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X.
