The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, concluded his first trip abroad through Latin America with several victories about immigration, a priority for the president Donald Trump.
The new United States diplomat returns home with a folder full of foreign governments agreements in the priorities of day one to interdict Human and Drug Trafficking – A testimony of how the Trump administration exercises the economic power of the United States.
“I think the fact that his first trip was to Latin America, I think it was a great statement in itself,” said Joseph Humire, executive director of the center for a safe free society (SFS).
Then Rubio will go to the Middle East, with plans to visit Israel, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in mid -February after attending the Munich Security Conference. A wide strip of even more challenging circumstances awaits it there, including the concerns of foreign officials about Trump’s new idea to take charge “of the Gaza Strip, with the neighboring Arab states that oppose the insistence of us who They take in the Palestinians.

Before the secretary takes off for Latin AmericaThe Trump administration had already obtained several victories. Colombia made a lightning that is approaching to accept deportation flights that transported illegal immigrants who were heading home from the United States. President Gustavo Petro had initially denied two flights with Colombian citizens, saying that he would not accept the return of migrants who were not treated with “dignity and respect” and that they had arrived chained or in military planes.
But Trump immediately threatened 25% tariffs in Colombian goods, and Petro amounted to all the conditions of the United States, according to the White House, including the acceptance of migrants in military airplanes.
Rubio then began his regional tour in Panama last Saturday, a nation that nervously expected to see what his visit would maintain after Trump repeatedly asked for an American acquisition of the Panama Canal.
Trump had claimed that the channel was essentially under the control of China, Hong Kong headquarters control the entrance ports, and charging the unjust rates of the United States after the United States built the channel and returned it to Panama in A 1977 treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter.
After Rubio’s visit, Panama said he would not renew his Belt and Road (BRI) initiative With China, An investment project that the PCCH uses to ensure the influence on the developing nations around the world.
“Bri was great news,” Humire said.
“There are 22 countries in Latin America that signed a Bri agreement. If we really press this, many countries, especially those that are allied with us, will rethink” their agreements with China, he added.

Rubio had warned Panama that if his government did not move to reduce or eliminate PCCH control over the channel, the United States would move to do so.
According to channel treaties, the United States retains the duty to defend the channel if threatened.

But Rubio hit a statement that the State Department made Panama offered a free step through the Naval Ships channel in the United States.
The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, accused the United States of spreading “lies and falsehoods” about his nation that offers the free passage of the United States.
Then, the secretary sent the claim, while calling the “absurd” charges.
“It seems absurd that we have to pay fees to travel an area that we are obliged to protect at a time of conflict,” said Rubio. “Panama has a process of laws and procedures that must continue with regard to the Panamanian port.”
In Costa Rica, Rubio offered The United States helps fight a wave of drug trafficking crimes and go back to Chinese influence by limiting the development of the 5G technology PCCH in the country.
Then, in El Salvador, Rubio gave an offer from the friendly president with Trump, Nayib Bukele, to accept the deportees of any nationality, including US criminals.

At the same time, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to send 10,000 Mexican forces to the United States border after Trump agreed to delay a 25% threatened tariff on his nation’s exports to the United States.
Meanwhile, in Guatemala, President Bernardo Arévalo committed to accept 40% more deportation flights and accept people from other nationalities.
“I think many of the victories are due to their previous relationships with the region, their team and, frankly, their experience and their knowledge,” said Humire. “It is someone who can involve them in their language and in their kind of gestures.”
And, he added, Latin America saw “how serious” was Trump about deportations, observing the threats that the president made to Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

“I think we could have obtained more clarity from Panama on the channel,” Humire said. “But I think we find little resistance (in general).”
Rubio was not Trump’s only official to ensure the victories in Latin America. Special envoy Ric Grenelll sat down with Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro this week and He returned home with six American hostages. The price paid, according to Grenelll, was giving the Venezuelan dictator a photographic opportunity with an American diplomat for propaganda purposes.
The Trump administration now expects deportation flights to Venezuela to resume “within 30 days,” said the Tom Homan border to the New York Times, after Maduro previously refused to accept Venezuelan nationals from the United States.

“He is in an adhesion policy,” Humire said. “(Maduro) thinks, they call it the zero agenda, they think they can renew, restart relations with the United States by being basically in good behavior, beginning to guide us towards their interests.”
“Grennell has to be able to get the things we need without giving much. And I think he did it,” Humire continued. “The Op Photo, will turn it, will use it for misinformation. But that is a small concession to take hostages to hostages home.”
