The president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, resigned after the pressure to resign before running from a presidential election that was canceled controversial last year.
The December vote was annulled by the main court of Romania after the accusations of interference of the Russian State.
The outgoing Iohannis, a pro-Eue liberal, had said that it would remain in office until a successor was chosen in May.
But that had been strongly criticized by extreme right politicians and their supporters, who had worked well in the first round of the vote in December.
His criticisms had inspired tens of thousands of Romanians to take to the streets last month in protest against the cancellation of the elections.
Opposition legislators had launched a motion in Parliament again on Monday to move through the president’s suspension.
In response, Iohannis said he would resign, in an attempt to limit what he said would have been a divisive and “harmful” referendum for the country.
“To save Romania and the Romanian citizens of the crisis … I resign to the office of the president of Romania,” he said. He said he would officially stop on Wednesday.
