The Italian police have launched a series of raids aimed at clans of the mafia operating in the Sicilian capital and its surroundings.
More than 1,200 officers were involved in the operation, that Carabinieri’s military force said it was aimed at “dismantling” the mafia of the area.
The raids, the largest for several years, were seen as an offer by the Italian authorities to stop the mafia that reconstructs its governing body known as a dome.
Several chiefs of the mafia have been released from jail in recent months in appeal. But researchers say that those who are still behind bars have used encrypted mobile phones to continue their activities.
They also discovered that the mafia Nostra de Sicilia has updated the practices of its “founding parents” and no longer need to meet in person.
A local leader had managed to get hidden and still influence organized crime in his local district, police explained.
For more than 100 years, the famous mafia of Sicily maintained control of local cities and cities, extorting companies through protection money and obtaining great profits with drug trafficking.
In the early 1990s, cross-mafia prosecutors were killed while trying to return the blow.
Then, in 1993, the so -called Chief of Chiefs, Salvatore “Toto” Riina, was arrested in Palermo, and in 2023, the notorious Matteo Messina Denaro mafism was arrested while visiting a local clinic.
Although many gangsters are in jail, the Carabinieri said they had managed to smuggle small mobile phones in their cells in an attempt to continue their criminal activities.
Police said they had discovered on the chats encryption of the mafia by installing listening devices in the houses and cars of the suspects. However, it is not yet believed that they have deciphered the encryption, so their ability to listen to hidden has been limited.
According to the repubblica, the police are still trying to hunt chat members who go for nicknames such as Robert de Niro and Spider Man.
Tuesday’s raids began before dawn, attacking clans through Palermo, from Tommaso Natale in the north of the city to Porta Nuova in the center.
Police said his investigation covered a variety of alleged crimes, from the association of mafia and drug trafficking to the attempt at murder and armed crime.
Several bosses who had already been released from jail after serving sentences are among those arrested.
According to the reports, among them was Tommaso Lo Presti, who had spent 12 years in jail before his release in 2023.
There was a protest last year when it arose that Lo Presti had celebrated its anniversary of silver weddings in a church in Palermo where the anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone was buried.
