Bill Haney hints at major fight announcement for Devin

Bill Haney says he has some “Great news” Coming soon on his son, Devin Haney’s next fight. Devin (31-0, 15 KOs) has been benched since his loss seven months ago, and it looks like he might finally return to action.

Papa Haney will look foolish if Devin’s next opponent is a tomato can or an old veteran, like many of the guys he built his 31-0 record with. No one expects much from Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) for his return, given the beating he took from Ryan Garcia on April 20 in Brooklyn, New York.

Devin needs someone like Oscar Duarte to prove he can handle a puncher without being repeatedly sent to the ground. But that’s not realistic. Billy isn’t crazy enough to let Devin fight Duarte and watch him get destroyed.

“Working on something BIG” said Bill Haney in X.

To help build the rematch with Kingry, Haney needs to fight someone like Alberto Puello, Arnold Barboza Jr. or Richardson Hitchins. None of those fights have a chance of happening.

Haney shouldn’t lose because he has a big-money rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025, and they won’t want to blow that money. However, Devin has to fight someone to take the taste out of the fans’ mouths, who can’t forget the image of Kingry taking him down three times.

My prediction is that Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero will be selected for Haney. That guy seems to be on his way. Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs) is flawed, losing two of his last four fights and talking well. Romero would help sell a fight between him and Devin on PPV. Boxing fans would eat it up.

It would be a mistake for former two-division world champion Devin, 26, to face another big puncher after what Garcia did to him. Even a former paper champion like Rolly would be a high-risk opponent for Haney, and he might regret ever fighting him.
