There are two types of great TV shows: the ones millions of people watch and talk about, and the ones that never enter the larger cultural conversation. In the latter case, it is not for indignity. It’s just that not every great series finds its fandom.
So you’d be forgiven for missing out on one — if not all — of the best series that premiered last year. After all, with countless networks in various formats (broadcast, cable, streaming, and more), there’s a lot of TV to sort through, all for those looking to get into the original content game. Some are worse than others; some of them a lot worse. Fortunately, we’ve done the heavy lifting and taken the guesswork out of it for you. Below are our picks for the best TV shows to miss in 2024.
After the flood
Whatever you think After the flood you’re probably wrong, or at least missing a big part of the series’ appeal. After flooding left large parts of a Yorkshire town under water, police officer Joe Marshall (Peaky Blinders‘ Sophie Rundle) is called to a parking lot, where a man’s body is found trapped in an elevator, possibly strangled. But when the authorities learn that the unknown man was killed three days before the flood, Joe will do everything in his power to name the body at the morgue. When he makes the terrible decision to enter his DNA into an ancestral database, he learns that the man who breathed just 72 hours ago has been dead for years. For Jo, weeks away from giving birth, it’s a race to find the killer before motherhood arrives. And in doing so, she discovers that everyone, even those closest to her, are not who or what they say they are. Good news for watchers: After the flood has already been renewed for a second season.
Criminal record
Peter Capaldi plays against type as veteran detective Daniel Hegarty, who is nearing the end of an impressive career where his legacy may be in jeopardy. When an anonymous tipster provides some shocking information that casts doubt on the judgment of a high-profile, decades-long case Hegarty was working on, he prefers to imagine he got it right the first time. What he didn’t expect was for Detective June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) to receive the same information and begin retracing Hegarty’s steps, putting the two at extreme odds. The ever charming Capaldi has found a great sparring partner in Jumbo. Work is already underway on the second season.
Diarra from Detroit
Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a teacher coming off a painful divorce and feels like she might finally be ready to re-enter the dating scene, or at least have some fun on Tinder. What she didn’t expect to find was Chris (Shannon Wallace), a serious soul mate potential. When he completely stops hearing from her after their great night together, Diarra insists that he’s gone missing because there’s no way he’s dreaming…right? His closest friends are skeptical, but Diarra tries to find his man and soon finds himself embroiled in Detroit’s extremely dangerous criminal underworld. Did we mention it’s a comedy? Kilpatrick (with Kenya Barris) is a force of nature in this BET+ series that he created and executive produces.
Lost Boys and Fairies
We know that Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomato is not the final word on quality. But he says something like this Lost Boys and Fairies it has a perfect 100 percent score (based on only half a dozen critics, but still). After nearly a decade together, Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young) and Andy (Fra Fee) decide they’re ready to take the leap into parenthood. But when he officially begins the adoption process, Gabe, whose childhood was traumatized by the death of his mother and a strained relationship with his homophobic father, worries that he is not capable or worthy of being a loving parent. . It’s a powerful, poignant reminder that the bonds that bind us can tear us apart.

Even if you didn’t pay attention in your third grade history class, you probably know the basics about Abraham Lincoln’s assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. When their mother is suddenly found dead on the Isle of Man, they must come together – albeit briefly – to identify her body and return it to the UK where their father awaits. While both sisters are confused as to what their mother was doing on the island in the first place, they soon come to learn about the many buried chapters of their mother’s history that brought her here. Jones (Mr. Jack) and the best (Dragon House) can never be better or worse when the two are sisters.
Mr. Spade
Clive Owen joins a long list of formidable actors, from Humphrey Bogart to Tom Wilkinson, to play Dashiell Hammett’s famous private detective Sam Spade. In this case, Mr. Spade It takes place twenty years after the events, in the early 1960s Maltese Falconand Spade decided to retire to the picturesque town of Beauzouls in the south of France. But when a group of nuns are brutally murdered at a nearby convent, Spade must once again put on his detective hat to solve the crime.
Miss Jane
With a slightly reminiscent tone GreatGemma Burgess’ Miss Jane Reimagines the life of Lady Jane Gray (Emily Bader) through a slightly supernatural lens. Yes, shape-shifters abound in this version of 16th-century England—which only adds to the weirdness. But in his heart Miss Jane It tells the story of the budding romance between Jane and Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Blumel), whom her mother agrees to marry her. Unfortunately, that’s all eight episodes we’ll get from the series, as Amazon announced its cancellation after just one great season.
The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh
lost Star Naveen Andrews puts his comedic chops to good use in this darkly humorous tale of the American Dream gone wrong. In what appears to be a perfect business opportunity, Mahesh (Andrews), the patriarch of the Pradeep family, moves his family from India to America, where culture shock is the least of their problems. When we meet the family, they have been living in Pittsburgh for two years and tell their story to a pair of federal agents (Pete Holmes and Romy Rosemont) from the US Immigration and Naturalization Service. is suspected of burning down the house of his snobby neighbors (Megan Hilty and Ethan Suplee). The most amazing part is that the story is partly based on the real life of creator Vijal Patel.
Sugar
The small screen has been good to Colin Farrell this year, especially with his success Penguin. But five months before reprising his role as Oz Cobb, the Oscar-nominated actor went neo-noir. Sugar. In the stylish crime drama, Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective hired to investigate the disappearance of a Hollywood producer’s grandson while battling his own personal demons. If you’ve heard anything about the show, you probably know there’s a twist (more than one, actually). A second season has already been confirmed.
Renegade Nell
Sally Wainwright has never been credited as the creator of “family-friendly” fare – unless your kids think they’re watching too much Happy Valley it’s an all-ages affair. But it is a creative force Renegade Nell it even makes sense when you watch the first episode. After being arrested for murder, Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) becomes one of England’s most feared street ladies. Of course, it’s all a bluff, but Nell realizes that the best way to clear her name is to lean into the fame that surrounds her and have a little fun with it. Harland is a joy to watch (even when you know Season 2 isn’t on the menu).
