The United States will be present in conversations about the future of the Chagos Islands, which has been subject to a controversial agreement between Mauricio and the United Kingdom, Mauricio’s prime minister said.
Last October, the United Kingdom announced that it would deliver the sovereignty of the islands, officially known as the British territory of the Indian Ocean, to Mauricio, but would maintain a 99 -year lease contract on the United Kingdom military air base on the island plus Great, Diego García.
The agreement was reached with former leader Mauricio Pravind playouth, but Navin Ramgoolam, his replacement, has been very critical.
Progress has also been delayed to allow officials of the incoming team of President Donald Trump to analyze the details of the agreement.
The agreement reached in October, which had been green by the Biden administration, includes the United Kingdom that paid the lease payments to Mauricio for the United Kingdom military base -United States.
However, shortly after the agreement was reached, Mauricio chose a new prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, who wanted to reopen negotiations.
In a statement on Instagram on ThursdayThe office of Prime Minister Ramgolam said he had accepted “the presence of a representative of the new administration in the United States of America in negotiations to further strengthen the process.”
Ramgoolam also said that this showed that he was open and willing to “find common land,” and added that he was confident that there would be a “positive resolution.”
He was summoned in the Telegraph newspaper of the United Kingdom saying that the White House had requested that he had someone in the conversations.
Earlier this month, Ramgoolam told the Mauritian parliamentarians that the man who replaced had negotiated the previous agreement, describing it as a “exhaust.”
He said that the payments that the United Kingdom had agreed to make to Mauricio were not inflation proof and should involve a larger amount in advance.
He also opposed a clause where the United Kingdom could unilaterally extend Diego García’s lease contract for another 40 years.
It is not clear what exactly the position of the United States is in the agreement, but last year, before being in office, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he represented a “serious threat”, arguing that he gives the islands to a Country aligned with China. Mauricio has a commercial agreement with China.
The United Kingdom took control of the Chagos Islands, since its then Colonia, Mauricio, in 1965, and then evicted their population of more than 1,000 people to give way to the base of Diego García.
Mauricio, who won the independence of the United Kingdom in 1968, has maintained that the islands are theirs, and the highest Court of the UN has ruled, in an advisory opinion, that the administration of the United Kingdom territory is “illegal.”
The islanders of Chagos, some in Mauricio and the Seychelles, but others who live in the United Kingdom, do not speak with a single voice in the destiny of their homeland.
Some have criticized the agreement, saying that they were not consulted in the negotiations.
