The news that Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, has been living in a retirement center and experiencing a “very rapid” decline This week sparked an outcry on social media across the political spectrum.
Among these voices including billionaire Elon Muskkey advisor and supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
“Maybe we should have some basic cognitive testing for elected officials? This is getting crazy…” Musk said, referring to the Granger news.

Former Department of Education press secretary Angela Morabito said Granger’s staff were possibly “complicit.”
“WOW: Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), who hasn’t voted on a bill in six months, has been secretly living in a nursing home. Records show she has a staff of 25. If any of “they knew… and it would be difficult not to know: they are accomplices”, Morabito shared on X.
Former Texas state representative Jonathan Stickland also commented on Granger, expressing that he was aware of your memory problems.
“No one should be mad at Rep. Kay Granger. Six years ago (as an elected official who regularly worked with or around her) it was obvious that she had serious memory problems. She hasn’t had a clue what was going on for a while. However, her friends, family and staff lied to her. They failed to protect her and left her in office for their own benefit. Please pray for peace for Rep. Granger,” Stickland posted.
Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee said the news about Granger made a “compelling case for term limits.”
Granger’s absence was first reported by the dallas express on Friday, which cited a constituent in his district who said he resided in a memory care facility in Texas.
Axios political reporter Hans Nichols admitted he missed the story about Granger due to limited resources for journalists. on CNN Monday.
“(We)… have limited resources and limited time to report all of these stories. That being said, we should have gotten the Kay Granger story. I mean, I’ll own some of that, as someone who spends some time on the Hill. You know, collectively we’re all guilty, you know, individually, it’s hard to parse the blame,” Nichols said.

Granger’s story comes after a year defined by President Biden’s mental fitness and cognitive issues that ultimately led to him being forced to drop out of the Democratic nomination. Reports have emerged of a coordinated effort to hide their decline from the public.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierrewho repeatedly dismissed questions about Biden’s ability to serve, told CNN in June 2022 that she herself struggled to keep up with the president.
“Don, are you asking me this question?” Jean-Pierre exclaimed, visibly stunned. “Oh my God. He’s the president of the United States.”

Progressive independent journalist Ken Klippenstein posted in reference to a video of Granger speaking in the House, in early 2024.
“The claim that no one knew about Congresswoman Kay Granger’s dementia is ridiculous. Here she is speaking before Congress in March, stuttering and stumbling over every sentence while relying word for word on a written script. It’s painful to watch” Klippenstein shared.

Granger, who is 81, did not seek re-election and will retire at the end of this end of congress next month. He has remained largely absent from the Capitol in recent months, having cast his last vote on July 24. He was not present in more than 54% of the votes this year. He also resigned from his position on the House Appropriations Committee, which writes bills that fund the federal government.
