The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has sent a group of senior officials to Saudi Arabia for meetings with the United States on a possible peace agreement for Ukraine, the Kremlin announced Monday.
The officials, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Putin’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Yuri Ushakov, will meet with American counterparts on Tuesday. The groups plan to discuss a restoration of diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow, as well as a Ukrainian peace agreement and a possible meeting between President Donald Trump and Putin.
The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will direct the United States delegation, accompanied by Trump Steve Witkoff and national security advisor Mike Waltz, confirmed the State Department on Monday.
The meeting comes a few days after Trump revealed that he had spoken with Putin in a phone call last week. Trump said he and Putin “agreed that our respective teams begin negotiations immediately.”
