Keyshawn Davis reiterated that he will not fight his friend Shakur Stevenson, but that he is open to an exhibition fight, “YouTube style.” He says people will want to see him and Shakur fight in an exhibition after they wipe out the 135- and 140-pound divisions.
For fans to be interested in seeing an exhibition match between Keyshawn and Shakur, they would have to become popular with casual boxing fans. Unfortunately, none of them are fighting quality opposition for attention.
WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) is routinely booed by fans at his fights, and Keyshawn has been selectively matched by his promoters at Top Rank throughout his three-year professional career.
Keyshawn (12-0, 8 KOs) is huge for the 135-pound division, and will have to move up soon because he looks like a reduced welterweight for his fights at lightweight. He is scheduled to challenge WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) on February 14, 2025, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Berinchyk is considered the weakest link among the champions at 135, which explains why Keyshawn is facing him. He is the only one he is capable of defeating. Even then, this is a 50-50 draw because Berinchyk is a much better fighter technically.
The only thing Keyshawn has going for him is his youth, his enormous welterweight frameand he is Side A. The last element could be enough for Keyshawn to win. If Keyshawn had to fight where he belongs at 147, he’d take that on, facing Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and taking punches through him.
I don’t know how it’s possible for Keyshawn to stop being a welterweight. Younger fighters can exhaust themselves without harm, but eventually, they can no longer do so by the time they reach their 20s or 30s. Until then, they play the system. If every sanctioning body had strict 10-pound rehydration limits, it would eliminate weight bullies.
“They keep asking me to fight you. We can make an exhibition; that’s what we can do,” said Keyshawn Davis in social networkstalking about fans wanting him to fight his friend, Shakur Stevenson.
“We can go YouTube style with these guys real quick. Who isn’t going to see it? They are still going to see the exhibition. They’re still going to see it. “We’ll do a showcase on these suckers when the time is right, and I’ll let you know when the time is right,” Keyshawn continued about wanting to do a showcase with Shakur. “You’re going to say, ‘Yes.’
“We’re going to show these motherfuckers off and gain weight, and then we’ll do the same thing. We are about to clean up the (lightweight) division and move up in weight. How angry is everyone?
“Man and Shakur will beat everyone up. We just beat everyone, moved up in weight and never fought. Then do it all again at 140. That would be fun as shit. Defeat all your favorite fighters. They will be very sick,” Davis said.
Keyshawn isn’t going to beat everyone at 135, nor is his friend Shakur. Look at the way Keyshawn chooses his opponents. he doesn’t go after any of these talented fighters:
–Raymond Muratalla
-Andy Cruz
– William Zepeda
–Edwin De Los Santos
Keyshawn, 25, will likely soon leave the 135-pound division without even trying to fight any of those guys because the chances of him losing would be too high. Nahir Albright almost defeated him last year, on October 14. Albright staggered Keyshawn and dominated him over the final four rounds, wearing him down with pressure like Andy Cruz did in the 2020 Olympics.
“Fans already know that the top three dogs have the same idea of who the top three dogs are in the 135-pound division. I’m okay with them putting me in that category at 12-0,” Keyshawn said, believing he is one of the top three fighters in the lightweight division.
“The best 135-pounders are the light-skinned ones (Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’, Shakur and me, period,” Keyshawn said. The best 135-pounders. Come on, bro. Call a spade a spade.
Keyshawn is getting way ahead of himself when talking about being in the top three at lightweight because he hasn’t beaten any contenders in the 135-pound division yet.
He’s not even close to being a top three lightweight fighter because he would need to beat contenders to reach that level. Keyshawn hasn’t even fought a contender. He has been protected by Top Rank in the same way that Edgar Berlanga was when he was in that company.
Keyshawn’s best wins
– Gustavo Lemos: Not a contender, he comes from a defeat
– Miguel Madueno: Not a second division contender
– Nahir Abright: same
– José Pedraza: 0-2-1 record before the fight
– Anthony Yigit: Non-contender
He is placing a lot of importance on fighting the small, exhausted light welterweight. Gustavo Lemoswho was coming off a loss to Richardson Hitchins and had to drop below 140 to fight Keyshawn on November 8.
Why did Keyshawn choose a short guy, Lemos, who fights at 140, as an opponent after a loss? I have a pretty good idea. This was completely old-fashioned cherry picking. When a fighter selects someone from a higher division to fight him, his goal is to gain an advantage because the guy is weakened. it’s cleverbut it works.
Casual fans or those without critical thinking skills are shocked and can’t put two and two together to realize they are being fooled. Keyshawn could have fought against his four-time conqueror, the Cuban andy cruzwho beat him in the 2020 Olympic final and refers to him as “My son.” Cruz volunteered to fight Keyshawn, but chose Lemos. What does that tell you?
