The Swedish police have been investigating the alleged sabotage of a submarine telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea, connecting Germany and Finland.
A series of submarine cables and gas pipes have been damaged in alleged attacks since the invasion of Ukraine of Russia in 2022, incorporating NATO to launch a monitoring mission In the sea last month.
The Swedish Coast Guard has sent a research ship east of Gotland, which is the largest island in the country and the reported location of the last violation.
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, said that the government is aware of cable breakage and added that “it must be seen in the context of the current serious security situation.”
The cable owner, Finnish telecommunications operators, Cinia, said he detected minor damage to his fiber optic cable, but added that he still worked as usual.
Cinia also said that it is the third time that this cable has been damaged in recent months.
The cable was separated in November last year.
There has been an increase in damage to underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea in recent months, caused largely by civil ships by dragging its anchors through the cables.
The Swedish police said that “preliminary investigation is related to suspicion of sabotage.” The Swedish coast guard has said they don’t know when the damage occurred.
“We have a ship called KBV 003 on its way east of Gotland. It is in the Swedish economic zone and we are helping with the investigation of the crime scene,” added the coastal guard.
European leaders have suspected Russian participation in infractions.
However, it has been found that bad weather, inappropriate team and human error are responsible for some damages.
The Bulgarian ship, the time, was authorized of sabotage by the Swedish authorities earlier this month.
