The Sudanese army says that it has broken a siege of almost two years imposed by the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF) in the key capital of the southern state of El-Obeid.
The advance occurred hours after the RSF signed a political letter in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi, to establish a separatist government in areas under its control.
The RSF and the Army have been in a vicious struggle for power since April 2023, which has killed tens of thousands of people and has forced millions of their homes.
The fight has divided the country, with the army controlling the north and the east, while the RSF contains most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.
El-Obeid, the capital of the state of North Kordofan, is a strategic center that connects the capital, Jardum, with Darfur. This is the last advance of the army in recent weeks after the recovery of several parts of Jartum of the RSF.
There was joy in the streets while Sudanese soldiers marched to the city.
A military spokesman Nabil Abdallah confirmed the profits in a statement, saying that the army forces had destroyed the RSF units.
The Minister of Finance, Jibril Ibrahim, said the measure was a “massive step” to raise the siege of RSF in El-Fafasher, the capital of the province of North Darfur, and would also allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Kordofan.
Sudanese civil society activist Dallia Abdlemoniem told the BBC Newsday program that the recovery of the city “was” huge “and” significant. “
She said the RSF had “kept civilians captive for almost two years” in the city.
She said the army was “making serious bases in terms of moving to the West, which is where the RSF focuses mainly.”
Both the army and the RSF have been accused of committing serious atrocities against civilians during the war, and their leaders are sanctioned by the United States. In addition, RSF has been accused of carrying out a genocide in Darfur.
Both deny the accusations.
The organization of Kenya of the RSF last week, since it sought to form a parallel government, was criticized by some human rights groups.
On Sunday, the Foreign Minister of Sudan, Ali Youssef, said that his country “would not accept” any country that recognizes “a so -called parallel government.”
In response, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “there was no hidden reason” in “providing non -partisan platforms to conflict parts.”
