The United States has been on the side twice with Russia in votes at the UN to commemorate the third anniversary of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the change of position of the Trump administration in the war.

First, the two countries opposed a European Draft resolution condemning Moscow’s actions and supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which was approved by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Then they supported a resolution drafted by the US. In the UN Security Council asking for the end of the conflict, but did not contain criticism from Russia.

The resolution of the Security Council was approved, but two key USed allies, the United Kingdom and France, abstained in the vote after their attempts to amend the writing were vetoed.

Competition resolutions were presented as French president Emmanuel Macron visited President Donald Trump in the White House in an attempt to address their strong differences on war.

On Thursday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will also visit the new US leader.

Trump’s White House has overturned the transatlantic alliance, with the favor of Moscow and throwing doubts about the long -term commitment of the United States with European security.

That crack was exposed on the floor of the Unga of 193 members on Monday when American diplomats pushed their limited resolution of mourning due to the loss of lives during the “conflict of Russia-Ukraine” and asked for a rapid ending.

European diplomats presented a more detailed text, blaming Russia for their large -scale invasion and supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

“We need to reconfirm that the aggression must be convicted and discredited, not rewarded,” said the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Mariana Betsa.

The members of the UNGA supported the European resolution for 93 votes, but, extraordinarily, the United States did not abstain, but in reality it voted against, together with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and another 11 states, With 65 abstentions.

The Unga also approved the resolution of the United States, but only after it was modified to include the language that supports Ukraine, which led to the United States to refrain.

In the much more powerful UN Security Council, which has 15 members, the UU resolution not modified was approved by 10 votes, with the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia refrain.

The United States action envoy to the UN, Dorothy Camille Shea, described the resolution of the United States as a “simple historical statement … that looks forward, not the other way around. A resolution focused on a simple idea: put end to war. “

The United States rarely has disagree with their alleged European allies.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, the Security Council has been blocked by the power of Russia, one of its five permanent members, to veto any resolution there.

For this reason, the Unga has been the main forum to discuss war, but its resolutions are not legally binding for Member States, unlike those of the Security Council.
