The Sudan military plane crashes in Omdurman killing more than 40

At least 46 people were killed and another 10 wounds after a Sudanese military plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Jardtum, the state media say.

The Antonov plane built in Russian fell after the take -off of the Wadi Seidna air base of the army on Tuesday night.

The cause of the accident, which killed military officers and civilians, is not clear, but military sources have been cited saying that it had probably been a technical malfunction.

The accident occurred one day after the Paramilitary Fast Support forces (RSF), which is at war with the Army, said it had demolished a combat plane in southern Darfur.

The conflict has devastated large parts of Sudan, including Jardtum and Omdurman, with thousands of murdered people and about 12 million displaced.

The Ministry of Health said the emergency teams ran to injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital after Tuesday’s plane crash.

A leading army commander in Jartum was among those killed, the Reuters news agency cited unidentified military sources, he said.

Witnesses said there was a strong explosion and that several houses were damaged when the plane fell, reports the AFP news agency.

The accident also caused power outages in nearby neighborhoods, he added.

Sudan has been in a civil war that began in April 2023 after the Army and the RSF were involved in a vicious power of power.

The war has divided the country, with the army controlling the north and the east, while the RSF contains most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.

In recent weeks, the army has resumed parts of Jardtum and its surroundings of the RSF.
