When Tudie Styler was growing in England of the working class of the 1960s, her family hoped she became typing in a painting factory.
But life was quite great: going to a good high school meant that Styler “began to dream much bigger,” he told CNBC by video called. She trained as an actress, joined Royal Shakespeare Company and met, and then married, Gordon Sumner, better known as Rock Star Sting. The couple has houses in New York, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Now, the producer and film director, Styler says that it was his “quite hard” childhood that helped him give him the confidence to direct his latest film, a documentary called “Posso will enter? The movie saw Styler wandering down the small paved streets of the Italian city, playing doors and asking: “Can I enter?” Interview people about their daily lives, as well as residents affected by the notorious city mafia, known as Camorra.
Growing in a house on terraces in the town of Stoke Prior in the English County of Worcestershire meant that, as children, “we were entering and leaving the houses of the other,” Styler told CNBC. His mother was a dinner lady and his factory working father, and one day, wondering when his dinner would be ready, Styler looked for his mother and found her in a neighbor’s house helping to deliver to a baby. “I said timorarily: ‘I’m hungry’ and … my mother said: ‘Sal!'” He recalled.
And when Styler told his parents that he wanted to act, he did not reduce very well. “That began a great fight with my dad, Harry,” Styler said. “I don’t think I understood that … Going to grammar school and learning languages and learning sciences, you know that your horizons, of course, expanded,” he said.
“That kind of trust I had when I arrived in Naples simply emerged,” he said.
Styler has had a relationship with Italy, after having acted in three films in the country in the 1980s and giving birth to his third son, Eliot, in Pisa in 1990. Later, that decade, she and Sting bought a farm in Tuscany, and Styler would often go to the Ischia Film Festival in the Bay of Naples.

But when Styler’s producer asked him if he would like to direct a documentary about the city, he realized that he didn’t know much about it. “Do you know Naples?” She would ask her friends, with some “rumors” repeated about being dangerous. But she decided to go with a “blank canvas,” he told CNBC.
“I am going to take away this feeling that has granted me, be afraid, be very afraid of Napoli and investigate myself … really trying to find the locals what they thought of their own city,” Styler said about his approach.
“People would knock their personal stories,” he said about his door blow. Among the characters in the film are the manufacturer of gloves Michelle and the eight -year -old grandson who took care of his mother, and Nora, a 90 -year -old swimmer who remembers Hitler’s tour in 1938 by Naples with Mussolini.
“It is very fascinating to go to a place with some preconceived ideas and only (being) uninverted of all that, and allowing the magical and rich experience of discovering a city and its people,” Styler said.

In an organized interview, Styler also met Roberto Saviano, author of the book “Gomorrah”, which tells the story of The Camorra’s “monstrous“Activities in Naples. It has been When hiding and under the police escort since its publication in 2006. “I thought they could turn lawyers against me, which they did,” he says about the Comorra’s response to his book. “But I didn’t think it would have caused military physical anger,” he tells Styler in the movie.
One of Styler’s interviews with the most striking groups is the Forti Guerriere campaign organization, which was created by several women after her husband fortune killed her friend Fortuna in the city. They campaigned successfully so that their prayer was increased from 10 years to 30 years. “Women are really now, adopting a great position against femicide and violence in the house. It’s very encouraging to see that,” Styler told CNBC.
Meanwhile, the former mayor candidate Alessandra Clemente speaks with Styler about her mother’s accidental murder by Camorra in Naples and her efforts to help young men in the city to look for a non -violent life, and the film also presents Antonio Loffredo, a priest who opens her church to local groups.

Through its producer Maven Pictures, who founded with producer Celine Rattray, Styler seeks to “push the dial” for women in the film industry, and the firm has made 28 films since its foundation almost two decades ago. “When we created Maven, we said, that’s fine, we are going to give the actresses more opportunity to bring us their projects, to be our co -producers, if we like the script enough and feel that we can do it,” Styler said.
Styler’s advice for women previously in their production careers is “to look for stories that have a strong female narrative, so you can create employment for women”, but she regretted that most scriptwriters are men, “often” write to men in main roles.
Some production roles remain dominated by men, as photography director or photography directors, Styler said. “For many, many years that have been like, oh, well, women could not be filmmakers who load around that camera. I mean … it’s quite annoying when you listen to such a language,” he said.
But transmission services are hiring “much more” women than in the past, Styler said. And the film industry has “improved for actresses,” he said. “Now they are not, as they are sent to pastures at 40, as they used to be. It is good to see that women’s races have been extended a lot, but there is a long way to go,” Styler said.
