Missing dozens in the Avalanche India Himalayas


At least 25 road workers remain trapped after a massive avalanche reached a remote border area in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India, authorities say.

The senior district official, Sandeep Tiwari, told the BBC Hindi that 32 workers had been rescued and moved to a nearby army camp.

The avalanche reached a camp of the border road organization (Bro) in the town of Mana, which shares a border with the Tibet, the authorities say.

The authorities said that rescue operations continued in extreme climate amid strong snowfall.

The Prime Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, wrote in X that the rescue work was being carried out by the Indo-Tibetan border police (ITBP), the bro and other teams.

Emergency ambulances and equipment have been sent, but the treacherous conditions continue to raise challenges for rescuers.

“Nobody lives there permanently. It is a migratory area and only the workers who work on the border roads remain there in winter. There is also a certain presence of the army there. We have heard that it has been raining in the area for two days. The road workers were in a camp when the avalanche hit.”

Earlier on Friday, the meteorological department of India warned of heavy rains and snow in the northern states of India of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, as well as Jammu and Kashmir.

Orange alerts have also been issued for snowfall in several districts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
