“It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco,” the musician’s family wrote on Friday 27th. Instagram statement on his official site. “His life was a testament to resilience, creativity and boundless love. He touched so many lives with his music, passion and unwavering spirit and left a lasting impact.”
The statement continued: “While we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived – a life that will continue to inspire and uplift others. Mac’s influence, both as an artist and as a person, will forever be etched in our hearts.”
The cause of death of Mac, real name Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., has not been publicly shared. He was previously reported to have suffered a gunshot wound. TMZ earlier this month, police were reportedly called to Mac’s Los Angeles home after a gun went off. According to the outlet, he was subsequently Maco transported to a local hospital for surgery.
“He is currently in critical but stable condition,” Dec. 16 declaration from the Macy family read. “He is receiving the best possible care and we remain hopeful that he will continue to fight. … Thank you for your understanding, support and continued prayers during this difficult time.”
Mac is survived by his parents and his older sister.
“Those wishing to offer condolences, share memories or connect with family, please contact through the account,” the statement added on Friday. “Your support means more than words can express. To all of Mac’s fans, friends and supporters: thank you for standing by him throughout his journey.”
The message concluded: “Today we celebrate a life that was extraordinary in every way. With love and gratitude, the OG Maco family.”
Maco rose to fame in 2014 with the release of his debut single “U Guessed It” with 2 Chainz.
“It’s so crazy because every day I wake up and I’m more famous,” he joked Vice later that year. “I think it’s like that for everyone in town who ends up doing it. It was a long period of ‘You’re mad because, you know, I’m nice! And nobody pays attention to it!”
At the time, Maco noted that he drew on his emotions when creating his songs.
“I’ll get over it. But because I can rap, it’s not just pure yelling,” he explained to the outlet. “It’s formatted, but it’s really just my pure emotion.
