A group of legislators from the Bipartisan Representatives Chamber is presenting legislation to redirect Turkey As a country of the Near East in the State Department, instead of a European country, as Ankara has moved away from the allies of the United States and NATO.
The Group of Lawmakers, LED by Reps. Brad Schneider, D-Bill., And Gust Bilirakis, R-Fla., Introduce the Turkey Diplomatic Realignment Act, which looks to formally move turkey’s designation at the us State Department from the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs to The Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Reflecting Ankara’s Deepening Ties with Russia, China, Iran, and Hamas, which are basic foundation at probabilities with Western security interests.
“Türkiye is at a crossroads, but Erdogan has made his decision,” Schneider said in a statement.

“His government houses Hamas agents, underpin the Putin war machine and obstructs the NATO unity, while demanding the privileges of a western ally. It is time for US diplomacy to stop pretending that Turkey remains part of Europe,” added the representative Schneider.
Bilirakis said the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan It acts repeatedly contrary to US interests, with dangerous behavior that contributes to the instability of the region.
“The time for the official foreign policy of the United States has come to more accurately reflect the realities of the behavior of this hostile regime and for Erdogan to be responsible,” he said in a statement.

“The Government of Turkey has become a headache for those in charge of formulating US policies. If Ankara maintains its current career, that the headache soon will become a migraine,” said Jonathan Shanzer, executive director of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, to the external affairs of the House of Representatives in Europe during the Türkiye between the West and East.
He told the Subcommittee that Türkiye behaves too often as an adversary, chasing evil national and foreign policies that fly before US interests. He cited the established history of Türkiye to support terrorist groups of the Middle East and dishonest states, including Hamas and other groups.
He also said that Türkiye used his NATO platform to undermine US interests. Türkiye kept Washington as a hostage by demanding the sale of F-16 combat aircraft in exchange for its approval to admit Sweden and Finland In the alliance.

Erdogan has deepened Türkiye’s relationship with Russia and Vladimir Putin during the war in Ukraine, buying the S-400 of Russian manufacture Missile defense system. And although much of the NATO alliance imposed suffocating economic sanctions on Russia and sought to move away from the energy dependence of Russia, Türkiye maintained narrow bonds with Russia.
The proposed legislation requires that the State Department reasigne the diplomatic status of Turkey within 90 days and present a five -year congress review on the consequences of Turkey’s realignment away from Europe.
Endy Zemenides, Executive Director of Hellenic American Leadership Council and whose organization supports the legislation, told Fox Digital that applauds the bipartisan group of legislators for demanding that the State department be realistically occupied by Ankara.
