It is alleged that the Syrian security forces killed hundreds of civilians who belong to the Alauito minority group in continuous violence along the country’s coast, according to a war monitoring group.
The Syrian Human Rights Observatory with British headquarters (SOHR) said some 745 civilians had been killed in around 30 “massacres” aimed at Alauitas on Fridays and Saturdays.
BBC News has not been able to independently verify these statements.
According to reports, hundreds of people have fled their homes in the region, a heart of the deposed president Bashar al -assad, which also belongs to the Alauita sect.
A total of more than 1,000 people have been killed in the last two days, said the Sohr, in what is the worst violence in Syria since the rebels knocked down the Assad regime in December.
This figure includes dozens of government troops and armed men loyal to Assad, who have been locked in clashes on the Coast of Latakia and provinces in tartos since Thursday.
Some 125 members of the government security forces led by Islamists and 148 Pro-Assad fighters have been killed in violence, according to the Sohr report.
A spokesman for the Syrian Ministry of Defense told the country’s healthy news agency that the Government had restored control after “treacherous attacks” against their security staff.
Violence has left the Alauita community in “a state of horror”, an activist in the city He told the BBC on FridayWith hundreds of people, according to reports, they flee from the affected areas.
Great crowds sought refuge in a Russian military base in HMEIMIM in Latakia, according to the Reuters news agency.
Video images shared by Reuters showed dozens of people who sang “people want Russian protection” outside the base.
Meanwhile, dozens of families have fled to neighbor Lebanon, according to local media.
The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said he was “deeply alarmed” for “very worrying reports of civil casualties” in the coastal areas of Syria.
He called all sides that refrain from actions that could “destabilize” the country and jeopardize a “credible and inclusive political transition.”
The Alauitas, whose sect is a branch of Shiite Islam, constitute about 10% of the population of Syria, which is the Sunnite Muslim majority.
