Mark Carney has won the race to happen to Justin Trudeau as the next Prime Minister of Canada, promising to win the commercial war against the president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The former Governor of Canada and the United Kingdom Central Banks beat three rivals in the liberal leadership contest in a landslide.
In much of his 59 -year -old Victoria, Carney, he attacked Trump, who imposed tariffs on Canada and said he wants to make the country 51 of the United States. “Americans should not confuse,” he said. “In commerce, as in hockey, Canada will win.”
Car Paney has sworn as PM in the next few days and will lead the liberals in the next general elections, which it is expected to be called in the coming weeks.
Carney, now appointed by Prime Minister, has never served in the elected office.
The leadership race began in January after Trudeau resigned after almost a decade in office. He had faced internal pressure to stop a deep unpopularity with voters, who were frustrated with a housing crisis and the growing cost of living.
Carney won in the first vote on Sunday night, taking 85.9% of the vote to overcome her closest rival, the former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland.
The strong cheers exploded when the results were announced to a multitude of about 1,600 festivities in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
The party said that more than 150,000 people had launched ballots in the race.
Carney, who will lead a minority government in Parliament, could call an instant general election or opposition parties could force one with a vote without confidence at the end of this month.
The liberals followed the conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, earlier this year for more than 20 points.
But they have reduced the gap since the commercial war with Trump began and now they are statistically linked to the official opposition, according to some surveys.
Much of Carney’s speech focused on Trump’s “unjustified rates” in Canada, the largest commercial partner in the United States.
“It is attacking the workers, families and Canadian businesses,” he said, causing strong boos of the crowd. “We can’t let it succeed.”
He said his government would maintain tariffs on US imports “until Americans show us respect.”
“I know these are dark days,” said Carney. “Dark days brought by a country in which we can no longer trust.
“We are overcoming the shock, but never forget the lessons: we have to take care of ourselves and we have to take care of each other. We need to unite in the hard days that are coming.”
Carney also promised to “ensure our borders”, which has been a key demand of Trump in his tariff confrontation.
The president of the United States even received a mention in Carney attacks against his main opponent, conservative leader Pailievre.
“Perere Poilievre’s plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered,” said Carney.
“Because a person who loves Donald Trump’s altar will kneel before him, he will not face him.”
Shortly before Carney took the stage, Trudeau gave an emotional farewell speech at the same event.
He warned that Canada faced an “existential challenge” of the United States under Trump.
The conservatives have had to pivot politically since Trudeau’s resignation, and are pointing to Carney as “just like Justin”, while accusing the liberals of a “cunning” plan to win a fourth mandate simply replacing their leader.
Pailievre’s party also accused Carney of Lying about his role in the movement of the central office of the investment firm Brookfield Asset Management from Toronto to New York. Carney says that the formal decision to relocate the company was taken after leaving the Board.
The Federal Minister of Public Security, David McGuinty, who supported Carney, told the BBC that “it embodies the type of quiet determination, but staunch the determination and competition to deal with some of these big problems.”
“I am very, very excited about what is coming. And, frankly, it’s time for an choice.”
The former central banker has run on a widely centrist agenda, a change in Trudeau, who changed the liberals to the left.
Among the key promises of the new liberal leader is to boost the main energy projects such as pipes, which have faced political obstacles in recent years.
He has promised large investments in housing and clean energy projects, and to liberalize trade within Canada, where barriers remain between the provinces and to diversify trade away from the United States.
During the leadership career, Carney promised to limit the size of the federal government, which expanded 40% under Trudeau and perform a program review.
