Air India has confirmed that one of his flights was forced to turn last week after plastic bags, rags and clothing obstructed most of his bathrooms, leaving many of his 300 passengers in discomfort.
The plane, which was heading from Chicago to the Indian capital, Delhi, a 14 -hour magazine, spent almost two hours in the air before he returned to the city of the United States.
The video clips from the inside of the plane showed confusion scenes when the passengers curled up around the crew members who seemed to be explaining the situation.
The incident has caused an animated debate on social networks, with many Indians who weigh on the airplane bath label.
Plane toilets store human waste in special tanks and use a vacuum system for rinse. These are normally removed once the plane has landed.
While obstructed toilets are not uncommon, it is “almost impossible” for all bathrooms to break “due to only the fault of the passengers, and in a way that causes an emergency detour,” said Mark Martin, an expert in aviation to the Hindustan Times newspaper.
The incident took place on flight 126 of Air India on March 5, but the airline issued a statement on Monday explaining what had happened.
He said he had also found objects such as blankets, underwear and diapers to rinse his bathrooms.
“We take this opportunity to urge passengers to use the bathrooms only for the purposes for which they are destined,” he said.
In the statement, the airline said that eight of its 12 bathrooms in the business and economy class broke after the crew members “found polyethylene bags, rags and clothing that had been carved and stuck in the plumbing.”
He launched several images that show bags that contain cleared waste from the bathrooms. A photo showed a crew member that held a drain pipe completely full of what seemed to be rags.
Due to the night restrictions in most European airports at that time, the airline said it could not divert the flight elsewhere, making the return to Chicago the only option.
“When landing in Chicago, all the passengers and the crew landed normally and were provided accommodation to minimize the inconveniences,” said a company spokesman, and added that the decision of divertes was taken “completely in the interest of the comfort and safety of the passengers.”
The airline added that it offered the passengers complete refunds and rescheduled flights.
In X, many criticized the airline for poor maintenance and the lack of sanitation facilities in their aircraft.
“Only Air India has such frequent mishaps. Honestly, what has happened is indefensible,” said a user.
But others pointed out that the airline could not be responsible for the situation.
“Can we honestly rule out all Air India’s fault and crew, when people can’t follow the basic travel label?” Another user said.
