The Brown family brought the surrounding drama to life Mary Brownlegal divorce s Cody Brown in the latest episode Sister’s Wives — s Christine Brown to claim that was all Robyn Brownidea.
“When Robyn first came into the family, she started talking to us about these other families where the first wife divorced the husband so he could legally marry the second wife and legally adopt the children,” Christine, 52, said on Sunday in December. 29, episode of the TLC series.
Christine claimed she thought, “That’s a plant” at the time, and that Robyn, 46, was suggesting she wanted Meri, 53, to do the same for her and her children.
“She’s put it in there a few times over the years because she’d like it to happen,” Christine continued, noting, “I don’t think Meri would have planted it.” I think Meri felt it was her own idea.
Meri legally married Kody, 55, in 1990, to become his first wife. The plural family expanded its offspring in 1993, when Kody got spiritually married Janelle Brown. In 1994, Christine entered into a spiritual union with the patriarch.
When Robyn started dating Kody in 2010, she already had three children from a previous marriage. Four years later, Meri and Kody were legally divorced and married Robyn and then she adopted her children.
While Christine claimed all along that it was Robyn’s plan, she denied the allegations. “The idea that I put an idea in Meri’s head is an absolute lie,” Robyn said on Sunday’s episode. “I never said that.
She claimed: “I don’t even know anyone who divorces his first wife so that the second wife can adopt the children. I’ve never even heard of it before.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Robyn claimed: “I have a feeling I was gaslighted by some family members,” suggesting that her actions were misunderstood.
Meanwhile, Janelle admitted she was cautious when Meri split from Kody in 2014 because of the dynamics their families at the time.
“I was actually speechless when (Meri) told us she was actually doing this because I thought Meri would never do that,” Janelle recalled. “I was already starting to realize that Robyn was getting a little bit of favoritism from Kody at that point, and I was worried.
However, Robyn insisted that it was never her intention to legally marry Kody, especially after her previous divorce. She said it was Meri’s idea, while Meri said she initiated proceedings, but she and Kody discussed it together.
“(Meri) had this idea in her head to legally marry me so that Kody could adopt my children,” Robyn told viewers, claiming, “I never even wanted to be legally married to Kody.”
Robyn claimed she was “really grateful” that she “won’t be legally married” to Kody because she went through “so much trauma from my legal divorce in my last marriage.”
She added: “I was very happy and satisfied with my spiritual marriage. I didn’t need anything else.”
Even though Meri took steps to get the breakup going in 2014, she didn’t think it would have that much of an effect on her emotional state or her marriage to Kody.
“I wonder if he already had that plan in mind at the time (saying, ‘If I can do it, it’s going to be an easy transition,'” Meri told the cameras, claiming that within “six months” of signing the papers, Kody “stopped dating” .
She recalled that when she went to the lawyers to sign the papers, she was in “a lot of pain” because she didn’t feel the “emotional support” of the other wives or Kody.
“I had that logical part where I was like, ‘No, you still have the spiritual side of marriage.’ I felt emotionally like I was getting rid of the whole marriage,” explained Meri. “It was so hard. And all the time I had to say to myself, ‘No, not that. We still have that spiritual marriage.”
Kody admitted that he wasn’t thinking about severing legal ties like a big deal. “In my mind, we were just shuffling legal papers,” he said. “Meri and I left Robyn after that divorce and we went out to dinner together. I gave her a special ring and we probably went home and made love.’
Meri and Kody remained spiritually connected almost 10 more yearsbut their relationship never resumed after their legal separation. (Meri confirmed her separation from Kody in January 2023 after months of speculation. Meanwhile, Christine and Janelle left Kody in 2021 and 2022.)
Looking back, Meri claimed that their divorce and her decision to buy a bed and breakfast in Utah (in which her mother lived until her death) was Kody’s way of distancing himself from their marriage.
“I think it’s interesting that I’m actually living in a house here, because when I bought the house, that wasn’t the intention,” Meri said in the episode after making the final move from Arizona to Utah. “I know Kody felt that way. I think the rest of the family too.”
She denied it was her “escape plan”, claiming: “I think the escape plan was a legal divorce. Let’s be real, that was his escape plan.”
Sister’s Wives airs Sundays at 10pm ET on TLC.
