A man allegedly kept captive for his stepmother for 20 years deliberately set fire at home in Waterbury, Connecticut, Last month to escape, police said.
The woman, identified by Waterbury police As Kimberly Sullivan, 56, was arrested Wednesday after an extensive research on the shocking claims of his stepson.
Police and Waterbury firefighters officials responded to the reports of an active fire in a residence on Blake Street on the night of February 17. Police said two occupants were inside the house at that time: Sullivan and his 32 -year -old stepson.
Sullivan was able to evacuate safely. Fire officials helped their stepson out of the house and placed it in the care of EMS because it had suffered smoke inhalation and fire exposure.

The stepson told the Police that he intentionally set fire to the room above, saying: “I wanted my freedom.” He claimed that Sullivan had kept him captive since he was 11 years old.
Police launched an investigation in collaboration with the office of the Waterbury State Prosecutor and determined that the stepson had been in fact held captive For more than 20 years.
The researchers determined that the stepson had suffered “prolonged abuse, hunger, severe negligence and inhuman treatment.”
It was found in a “severely emaciated condition and had not received medical or dental attention during this time” and had received “only minimal amounts of food and water, which led to its extremely malnourished condition.”

An arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday and the officers arrested it on Wednesday. She faces a series of positions, which include first -degree assault, second degree kidnapping and first -degree illegal restriction.

Sullivan was prosecuted in the Court on Wednesday, where the bond was set at $ 300,000. She will be in custody of the Connecticut corrections department, said Waterbury Police in a press release.
