The rules of time travel can be a bit subtle depending on the author Back to the future is held up as the standard of the genre, but usually anyone going back in time shouldn’t try too hard to change. Butterfly effect which The Simpsons” Treehouse of Horror showed off in the best possible way with a malfunctioning toaster, saying that the slightest change can wildly alter the future. Netflix’s latest surprise hit Time Cuthe gets a lot of mileage out of it by sending a young girl 21 years into the past to prevent his sister’s murder, and as a result, changes the timeline forever.
The worst part Time Cut is right there in the short summary, realizing that going back 21 years means that most of the action takes place in 2003, which explains why your back hurts right now. External banks star Madison Bailey proved she’s great in a heightened acting teen drama Netflix hit, but here she plays Lucy, a young girl who delights in stopping the Sweetly Slasher from killing her older sister Summer. The killer’s rampage in 2003 left the city forever scarred, the present day shows the city center in disrepair and everyone feeling sick and emotionally disconnected from life, clearly following the “currently depressed from the mere act of breathing” stage direction.
She is soon sent back to 2003 thanks to a time machine inside the barn, which will be explained later, and runs into her still-living sister (another Netflix star, Ginny and Georgia Antonia Gentry) and her friends Quinn (played by Griffin Gluck, best known for another Netflix series, Locke and Key) and Emmy (Megan Best, not a Netflix star, but she was the woman she saved Bob Odenkirk on the bus in No one). Through a series of events, Lucy tries to keep Summer alive and stop the Sweetly Slasher, but accidentally causes various deaths in the process, breaking one of the golden rules of time travel.
Time Cut can be compared to DarkGerman science fiction time travel seriesas both end up exploring similar concepts of time travel and prove that sometimes breaking the genre’s normal rules can work out for the best. Where the two differ is that Dark is full of amazing acting, multi-dimensional characters and an intricate plot Time Cut is a slasher. It’s okay because it’s delightfully campy and everyone understood the brief while filming, but you know what you’re getting into.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the camp acting and silly plot twists Time Cut, and i would say if you liked the time loop Happy death dayyou’d probably get some blast-to-the-past fun from this movie. The ending raises a lot of questions for time travel lovers to debate and debate for a long time, which is honestly more than I expected going into the movie. There are no standout kills for slasher fans, but at least you never find out the Sweetly Slasher’s identity before the big reveal, or at least I didn’t, although I had my theories.
Time Cut is a short slasher rollercoaster that clocks in at just 92 minutes, which I also appreciated about the film because it didn’t overstay its welcome and try to do too much. This is the type of movie that would have gone straight into the DVD bin at Best Buy in 2003, but in 2024, it’s the type of cheap streamer content pushed out almost daily. The time travel slasher concept isn’t new, but at least it’s fun and never takes itself too seriously.
Time Cut currently streaming on Netflix.
