The World Boxing Council has ordered #1 Christian Mbilli vs. #2 Jaime Munguía fight for the WBC interim super middleweight title to decide champion Canelo Álvarez’s mandatory belt with that organization.
It would be up to Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) to decide if he wants to defend himself against the winner of Munguia vs. Mbilli.
The Mexican superstar already defeated Munguía (44-1, 35 KOs) by unanimous decision in 12 rounds on May 4 of this year, appearing to carry him in the second half, choosing to forgive him. The scores were 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.
Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) would be a problem for the 28-year-old Munguía, as he is an aggressive fighter with excellent power and a high work rate. Although both fighters have shown vulnerability, 2016 Olympian Mbilli might have too many weapons for Jaime.
Mbilli’s recent victories:
– Sergiy Derevyanchnko: UD 10
– Mark Heffron: KO 1
– Rohan Murdock: RTD 6
– Demond Nicholson: KO 4
Mungiia, promoted by Top Rank and Zander, will fight this Saturday, December 14 in a 10-round confidence booster against little-known second-tier fighter Bruno Surance (25-0-2, 4 KOs) in Tijuana, Mexico. This fight has gone unnoticed by fans due to Surace being a complete unknown and Munguía’s poor performance against Canelo last May.
The criticism Munguía has received is that his promoters have strategically paired him for much of his career. He maneuvered between risky fights to build his 44-1 record without fighting anyone of quality. When Munguía finally faced a good opponent, Canelo, he was no match.
