Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams had been at the International Space Station since June 2024. Their mission was only scheduled to last a week after the launch of Boeing’s first Astronauts flight. However, after the spacecraft found technical problems, and NASA determined that it was insecure to return to the earth with astronauts on board, Wilmore and Williams remained caught at the International Space Station for months.
Wilmore, Williams, CREW-9 Commander Nick Hague and the Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov returned to Earth on Tuesday, with splashes off the Florida coast just before 6 pm et.
The return of Wilmore and Williams became a political problem for the Trump administration, and Musk previously told Fox News Sean Hannity on February 18 that Biden left astronauts in space for “political reasons.”
Shortly after assuming the position, Trump in charge Musk with bringing home to the two astronauts, who, according to him, had been “abandoned” by the Biden administration.
Trump also criticized former President Joe Biden for not acting before.
“I just asked Elon Musk and @spacex to ‘go to look for’ the 2 brave astronauts who have been practically abandoned in space by the Biden administration. They have been waiting for many months at the @space station. Elon will soon be on the way. With luck, everything will be safe. Trump published at that time.
At a press conference after landing with SPACEX officials and NASA on Tuesday, Deputy Associate Administrator ,, POT Joel Montalbano’s mission of space operations were asked about Trump and Musk’s statements that the Biden administration did not want to bring the Starliner team for political reasons.
“Yes, so I was not involved in any conversation with the previous administration,” said Montalbano. “It was clear that we had a request from the current administration, and the results that we saw are what we saw today with the crew-9 landing.”

Hannity pressed Musk in politics behind astronauts’ Delayed return, and Musk left the record in his communications with the previous Biden administration.
“We definitely offered to return astronauts before. There is no doubt about that,” Musk said.
“Astronauts were supposed to only be there for eight days, and they have been there for almost ten months. Therefore, obviously, that makes no sense. Spacex could have brought the astronauts back after a few months, and we made that offer to the Biden administration. It was rejected for political reasons, and that is just a fact.”
