Sloane Stephens read all the comments calling for her to retire – but don’t expect her to listen.
In an exclusive interview with My WeeklyThe tennis star, 31, explained how she has learned to cope with social media criticism over her 15-year professional career.
“People have no filter,” said Stephens, who spoke to us through her partnership with Daily Harvest. “They also don’t realize you’re another human being. They would never tell you to your face. In fact, it prohibits people from putting their lives on the line because they don’t want to be judged.”
Stephens added: “It’s all about what the athlete can do, isn’t it? “Should you retire?” I’m like, ‘If these people are still paying me, I’m not going.’ I think people don’t realize that if someone was paying you a lot of money, you wouldn’t quit your job. You won’t leave your job.”
Finally, Stephens explained that in her “phase, I don’t give them like—”.
“You generally have such a tough skin as an athlete,” said the 2017 US Open champion. “For punters and people who literally say, ‘You should have won, you motherfucker.’ So when people comment on my post like, ‘Why are you posting this?’ It’s my page. Get out.”
While Stephens boasts a well-worn armour, she acknowledged that “younger athletes haven’t experienced that”.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, whatever,'” she said of her mindset on social media. “If I post and you don’t like it, follow someone else. Unfollow me. block me Do whatever you need to do. If you feel secure in your world and your life and your tennis or whatever it is, you don’t react so much to the things other people say.”
As for her physical health, Stephens — who still spends 40 weeks of the year on the road — gushed over how her partnership with Daily harvest it arose, ironically, quite organically.
“I first started using Daily Harvest during COVID because we were all trying to figure out how to get healthy options,” she explained. “I couldn’t go out and I didn’t cook. Throughout my career I’ve always had little bits and stints where I’ve been somewhere for a month. I’ve always liked using the meal prep options because it’s easier for me.”
Now, Daily Harvest revealed a range of protein smoothies in Vanilla, Dark Chocolate and Mixed Berry flavors.
Daily Harvest also partnered with Doc & Glo, Stephens’ body care company, to highlight both brands’ commitment to active lifestyles and overall well-being.
“When they came out with the smoothie, I knew I had it written down,” she said. “It’s that easy, that simple. It just fits. It’s real.”
