Earlier this week, a report that caught Musk’s attention claimed that conservation minister Jess Phillips rejected a town council request for a government investigation into child sexual abuse in Oldham, near Manchester, in northern England. regions where allegations of abuse by grooming gangs have been made.
While Musk and his allies claim this is part of a larger government cover-up, Phillips actually wrote in a letter that “it is not government intervention, but only Oldham Council’s decision to investigate child sexual abuse locally. .” The previous Conservative-led government similarly rejected Oldham’s calls for a government-led inquiry in 2022.
Musk called for Phillips to be arrested, calling him a “rape genocide apologist.” Both Musk and Phillips did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment.
Musk is also using the report to renew calls for Starmer to be removed as prime minister.
“Starmer was complicit in BRITAIN’S COMPLICATION when he was head of Crown Prosecution Service for 6 years,” Musk wrote on X on Friday morning, which is now listed at the top of his timeline. “Starmer must go and he must face charges for his part in the worst mass crime in British history.”
Starmer, in his role as director of public prosecutions more than a decade ago, actually launched a prosecution of a grooming gang in Rochdale and introduced new rules allowing sex abuse cases to be prosecuted.
Starmer and the UK government’s press office did not respond for comment, but the health secretary did Wes Streeting told the BBC He said Musk’s comments were “misjudged and certainly misinformed.”
Musk also brought a number of right-wing US figures into the conversation, including Chaya Raichik, who runs TikTok’s anti-LGBTQ account Libs, anti-transgender activist Riley Gaines, right-wing commentator Ian Miles Cheong and other accounts. The former national security adviser of the United States has disgraced Michael Flynn.
US Senator Mike Lee also wrote in X: “Does Great Britain need to be freed?”
“Yes,” Musk replied.
Hedge fund manager and Trump supporter Bill Ackman repeated Musk’s story almost verbatim in a post on X. He then asked if the president-elect would “consider appropriate sanctions against the UK until these concerns are addressed”.
In a tweet on Friday morning, Musk stepped up his call for King Charles to dissolve the UK parliament and call a general election. In the UK, although the monarch dissolves parliament before a general election, it is only done at the request of the prime minister, and the monarch’s authority is essentially nothing more than a rubber stamp.
