A Globes win can help boost a film’s profile at a crucial time, when Bafta and Oscar voters prepare to fill out their nomination ballots.
But the Globes are a much less formal event than the Academy Awards, with celebrities generally in good spirits after the Christmas holidays, ready to socialize over drinks and have fun with their acceptance speeches.
Top film contenders:
Baby Reindeer, Shogun and The Bear are among the shows competing in the television categories.
In recent years, the voting body behind the Globes has expanded and diversified its membership and introduced a new code of conduct.
The changes continue a scathing LA Times investigation in 2021 which exposed several ethical failures, such as voters accepting “gifts” from studios and public relations agencies lobbying for nominations.
The Golden Globes split their film categories into drama and comedy/musical, allowing them to nominate more films and hand out more awards than other ceremonies.
The film with the most nominations is Emilia Perez, a primarily Spanish-language musical about a dangerous cartel leader who wants to leave the world of crime and live a new life as a woman.
However, several of her 10 nominations are in the same categories, with two nominations for best original song and two for best supporting actress.
Other contenders in the music/comedy category include longsthe story of a New York stripper who falls in love with the son of a rich Russian oligarch.

Box office hits including Deadpool and Wolverine, Twisters, Inside Out 2, Gladiator II and The wild robot will compete for the film and box office achievement award, which was introduced last year to recognize more mainstream films.
Dune: Part Two was not submitted in that category despite its enormous financial success, supposedly because the film’s producers I wanted Globe voters to focus for his artistic merits.
That means that if members want to vote for the film, they will have to do so in the main categories.
There is a much better chance of an actor being nominated at the Globes, where there are 36 spots available, than at the Oscars, which have 20.
As a result, the Globes can turn to big celebrity names, ensuring that their ceremony is well attended by celebrities who won’t necessarily get an Oscar nomination.
This year’s British acting nominees include Daniel Craig (Queer) Kate Winslet (Leeward), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) Hugo Grant (Heretic), Tilda Swinton (The room next door) and Felicity Jones (The Brutalist).

Strong’s co-star Sebastian Stan He has two nominations: one for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice and another for A Different Man.
But some of the strongest contenders this awards season aren’t necessarily Hollywood stars, like relative newcomer mike madison (Anora), Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Brazilian Fernanda Torres (I’m still here) and Russian actor Yura Borisov (Anora).
Away from the top categories, other notable nominees include singer Robbie Williams in the category of best original song, for Forbidden Road, from his biographical film Better Man.
Two of this year’s winners have already been announced: Viola Davis will take home the Cecil B DeMille Award, for his outstanding contribution to cinema, while Ted Danson will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award, for excellence in television.
The Globes have traditionally had excellent taste in hosts, regularly hiring a biting personality to make biting jokes about A-list guests.
They continue that model this year with the American comic. Nikki Glaser who gave a spectacular performance in The Roast of Tom Brady last summer.
Glaser said she was “absolutely excited” to host the Globes, adding that she was looking forward to getting a “front row seat” to “one of my favorite nights on television.”
“It’s one of the few times that showbiz not only allows, but encourages, being lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God, I hope so),” he said in a statement.
“Some of my favorite jokes of all time come from previous Golden Globes opening monologues, when Tina (Fey), Amy (Poehler), or Ricky (Gervais) said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear.
“I just hope to continue that time-honored tradition (which might also get me cancelled). This is truly my dream job.”
American viewers can watch the show live on the CBS network, which airs the Globes as part of a five-year deal.
It will also stream on Paramount+ with Showtime. The ceremony begins at 01:00 GMT and usually lasts between three and four hours.
UK viewers without a VPN can expect to see highlights on social media, YouTube and news bulletins on Monday morning.
