Nicole Kidman paid an emotional tribute to his late mother Janelle Ann Kidman she received the International Star Award at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Nicole, 57, accepted the award for her role in the film Little girl on Friday, January 3, which he presented to her Jamie Lee Curtis. Kidman gave thanks in her speech Little girl director Halina Reijnová and dedicated the award to her late mother, whom she said she was “still grieving”.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say, ‘This is for my mom,'” Nicole said in her tearful acceptance speech. “My whole career has been for my mom and my dadwho are not here now. I will continue to work and give to the world because I love what I do and I love you all and I am so grateful for the privilege of being a part of the film community.”

She added: “I’m sorry for crying, I didn’t mean to. But I’m feeling my mom right now, so this is for you.”

Janelle died in September 2024 at the age of 84. Nicole left the Venice Film Festival early on September 7 to return to Australia after learning of her mother’s death. At that time, Big Little Lies alum was awarded best actress at the film festival Little girl. Reijn later read a statement at the festival named Nicole confirming her mother’s death.

“I arrived in Venice today to learn shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed away,” Reijn, then 38, read from Nicole’s statement. “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, guided me and made me.”

The statement continued: “I am extremely grateful to be able to tell you all her name through Halina, the collision of life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.”
Janelle is survived by daughters Nicole and Antonio54.

Janelle’s cause of death has not been released. “The family is heartbroken and requests privacy at this time,” a spokesperson for Nicole said My Weekly at that time.

Nicole and Antonia thanked friends and fans for their well wishes joint statement shared via Instagram on September 12.

“My sister and I and our family want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we’ve felt this week,” their statement read. “Every message we received from those who loved and admired our Mother meant more to us than we will ever be able to express. Thank you to our entire family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other ❤️”
