Warning: This story contains spoilers about Season 1 No good deed.
The comedy series, which premiered on Thursday 12 followed by three rival families buy the same house they all thought would solve their problems. Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow play a married couple who sell their house after suspicious circumstances slowly unravel over the course of the eight-episode season.
No good deed confirmed in the series premiere that Paul (Romano) and Lydia’s (Kudrow) son was killed three years before they put the house up for sale. The couple waited until they no longer had to reveal the death, but the events surrounding their son’s murder affected their marriage. It remained unclear who was responsible for Jacob’s death – only that it was a gun from their home.
Finally, Paul and Lydia admit their daughter Emily (Chloe East), was the one who pulled the trigger. Jacob was involved in several home robberies in their neighborhood, and after he returned from his latest robbery, Emily freaked out and shot him because she didn’t realize it was her brother.
But the twists kept coming: it turned out that it was actually another weapon that was responsible for Jacob’s death. All signs pointed to their neighbor JD (Luke Wilson), but it turned out to be his wife (Linda Cardellini), who slept with Jacob and then shot him when he threatened exposure their business.
Morgan’s family was finally able to let go of the trauma – and even decide which couple would get their home. However, there were still plenty of unanswered questions that could pave the way for the next seasons of the show.
Romano and Kudrow spoke with My Weekly exclusively about the surprise on the screen will turn before the premiere of the show.
“There’s a major twist in the story. I think it works and it’s a good reward,” Romano noted. “But I think the whole show doesn’t rely on one twist.
Kudrow weighed in on the overarching storyline, adding, “For me, the goal is always to make it fun and make it something you look forward to and watch.”
Keep scrolling to find out where each character stands at the end No good deed — and how the story set the show up for the next episodes:
When No Good Deed started, Paul was focused on selling his and Lydia’s house. He was even more motivated when Mikey (Denis Leary) — who turned out to be his brother — started threatening him with money. Viewers slowly learned that Paul sought Mikey’s help when he found his son Jacob dead. Mikey covered it up, but after going to jail for another crime, he wanted compensation for the secrets he kept from Paul.
Throughout the season, Paul tried to send Mikey back to prison. He shifted gears as Lydia made a brief appearance to kill Mikey. But when Mikey was revealed to be fine, Paul locked him in a secret room in the house and held him as a prisoner. By the end of the season, Paul and Lydia’s marriage was falling apart from the secrets they had to constantly keep. They still they managed to work things out when Lydia saw Paul talking to their son about wanting to mend their relationship.
Once Paul and Lydia found out who really killed their son, they were able to sell their house and start over.
Season 1 largely focused on Lydia’s grief and how the guilt of Jacob’s death contributed to her deteriorating mental health. Lydia began to have reservations about selling their house once she noticed the lights going on and off in Jacob’s room, something she took as a sign that her son was still messaging her.
Lydia’s determination led to Mikey’s death, which turned out to be a false alarm. She then crossed paths with her neighbor Margo. This brief friendship once Lydia broke up he realized that Margo was taking care of her teenage son and then killed him. After connecting the pieces, Lydia was able to start playing the piano again and reconnected with her daughter.
No Good Deed introduced Margo as a woman in a loveless marriage who wants to move on. Margo was also one of the bidders for Morgan’s house, trying to manipulate JD’s husband into buying it for them. As the series unfolded, it became clear that Margo was spreading a lot of lies. She didn’t tell JD that she grew up poor and purposely pursued him so they could get married and she could have access to his money.
Margo didn’t tell Lydia about her affair with Jacobwhich led to his death. The lies caught up with Margo and she almost died in her house after an accidental fire. In her final scene, Margo was on the run (with half her face burned beyond recognition), but Mikey’s son Nate (Kevin Alves), still tracked her down and she was arrested.
JD was originally one of the main suspects due to his confusing behavior. After becoming a famous soap star, JD was killed and his mental health caused him to show up to sit with a gun. He started the season intermittently when he went beyond his means to please Margo. Their marriage once broke up he found out about her affairwhich then turned out to be multiple affairs.
JD’s gun was the one that killed Jacob, but he wasn’t the one holding it when it went off. Before Margo took the blame, JD left her and turned his life around. The season ended with him working on a new project that could potentially be a production of Taylor Sheridan based on the horse and cowboy hat he was introducing for the scene.
One of the potential couples vying for the Morgan property was Carla (Teyonah Parris) and Dennis (OT Fagbenle). After getting married earlier that year, they were weeks away from welcoming their first child – just months after they first met. Carla struggled to adjust to her new normal, which involved Dennis’ mother being too involved in his life.
After Dennis’ mother tried to buy a house with them, Carla offered another house with money from her estranged father. Carla and Dennis eventually changed their minds and were back in the running for the Morgan home, but they weren’t the ones who got it. By the end of the season, Carla and Dennis were new parents and she had reconciled with her off-screen dad. The only problem? Unbeknownst to Carla, her father sent her a huge check that Dennis cashed. Dennis instead he lied about getting it he was selling his new book and now Carla’s father was sending him threatening messages.
The other couple trying to get Morgan home was Leslie (Abbi Jacobson) and Sarah (Poppy Liu). After choosing not to go ahead with IVF, Leslie and Sarah found their forever home. This caused them to engage in a murder that happened in the house, which led to Lydia solving the case. Although Leslie had given up on expanding their family, Sarah secretly continued the injections and was close to giving birth in the finale.
Leslie and Sarah people were finally chosen live in the house of Lydia and Pavel.
Paul’s brother was originally introduced as a mysterious man looking for money. As the season continued, Paul and Mikey’s childhood in their home was told through flashbacks. It explained why Mikey had initially helped Paul cover up Jacob’s murder – and why he was now threatening Paul with money. Siblings were able to exercise their differences, but not before Paul locked Mikey in a secret room of the house. Eventually, Mikey escaped and helped track down Jacob’s real killer and reunited with his son, Nate.
