Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was admitted to the hospital after suffering an unspecified injury during an official trip to Luxembourg, her office said Friday.
US media reported that Pelosi suffered hip injuries after tripping and falling during an event, citing sources who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
Pelosi, 84, “is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and healthcare professionals,” spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement.
The Democrat, who still represents California in the U.S. House of Representatives, was traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation to Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Krager said Pelosi “hopes to return to the United States soon” and continues to work from the hospital.
The congresswoman from San Francisco has been a leading figure in American politics throughout a career spanning seven presidential administrations.
She first served as speaker of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, an influential second-in-line presidential position after vice president, and then regained the position in 2019, after her party regained control of the chamber.
He resigned from the position in 2023 after two separate four-year terms in office. But she has continued to serve in the House. Last month, she was elected to another two-year term.
Pelosi joined 17 other House members on the bipartisan trip to Luxembourg, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office. The delegation is scheduled to participate in the anniversary events along with veterans, their families and military officials.
Pelosi will no longer be able to participate in the events, her spokesperson said.
His injury comes just days after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, suffered a sprained wrist and cuts to his face after falling at the U.S. Capitol.
