What helped produce Yellowstone such a cultural phenomenon is the show’s willingness to take risks — especially with his on-screen death.
The hit series that premiered on Paramount in 2018, followed the fictional Dutton familyowners of the largest ranch in Montana. Many spectators came Kevin Costner‘s portrayal of family patriarch John Dutton and stayed on for other major roles on the show, incl Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Cole Hauser and Kelsey Asbill.
Despite its almost immediate success, Yellowstone he famously faced some major hindrances behind the scenes. In February 2023, rumors first surfaced about Costner’s future Yellowstone amid alleged tension between him and the creator Taylor Sheridan above the shooting schedule. Season 5 dropped the first batch of episodes a month ago, while production on the second half was backed up.
After a long hiatus, Costner confirmed yes in early 2024 would not return to the series. John was subsequently killed off – and Costner didn’t hold back on his character’s demise.
Before Yellowstone announced it was ending with Season 5, the cast had a lot to say about its future. Speculation about the show’s finale began in February 2023, when Deadline reported that Paramount Network was considering ending the show after season 5 due to scheduling conflicts with Kevin Costner, who plays the lead character John Dutton. “I’ll be perfectly honest – I didn’t know it actually aired last night. That is an oath to God. I see ads with my face everywhere and I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m not in it.’ But I didn’t realize it was yesterday,” Costner said on SiriusXM’s Program by Michael Smerconish in November 2024. “I hear it’s a suicide so I don’t feel like rushing to see it.”
Despite the alleged tension, the other cast members continued to show expansion expansion Yellowstone universe — an offshoot centered around Beth (Reilly) and Rip (Hauser) was allegedly picked up in the middle Yellowstonethe fifth season.

Lee Dutton
The shocking death took place in season 1 when Lee (Dave Annable) was shot and killed by Robert Long while trying to reclaim cattle from the Broken Rock Reservation.
Teal Beck
After causing trouble during Season 2, Teal (Terry Serpico) was shot dead by Kayce Dutton while begging for mercy — while sitting on the toilet.
And Jenkins
The land developer patched up his issues with the Dutton family in season 2, but ended up being shot by mercenaries in his home.

Malcolm Beck
During season 2, Malcolm (Neal McDonough) got into a shooting match with John, resulting in his death. John shot Malcolm in the abdomen and wrist as he reached for his fallen pistol.
Sarah Nguyen
Journalist (Michaela Conlin) was strangled to death in season 2 by Jamie, who made the incident look like a kayaking accident.
Wade Morrow
After betraying the Duttons during season 3, Wade (Southerland boots) was lynched by Rip (Hauser) and his fellow ranchers after attacking Teeter and Colby at the creek.
Garrett Randall
Jamie Dutton’s birth father was an antagonist throughout the fourth season. Garrett (Will Patton) was eventually shot in the head by his son.
Roarke Morris
Rip killed Roark (Josh Holloway) in season 4 by throwing a you rattle on him. The rattlesnake bit Roark in the face and he died quickly from the poison.
Donnie Haskell
The sheriff was killed in season 4 after a restaurant robbery went wrong. Donnie (Hugh Dillon) was eating when shots rang out in the cafe and one of the perpetrators shot him in the chest.
John Dutton
Patriarch Dutton apparently died by suicide before John’s death was eventually revealed to be a murder-for-hire plot.
Sarah Atwood
During season 5, an assassin he is hired to kill Sarah (Hello Olivieri) after her involvement in John’s death. Strangers riddle her with bullets and leave her for dead in a car.
Colby Mayfield
Yellowstone they kept the deaths coming in season 5 by having Colby (Denim Richards) die after being kicked in the chest by a horse.
