Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will return for more post-apocalyptic adventures in HBO’s upcoming second season The last of us.
Based on the 2013 video game of the same name, the series follows Joel (Pascal), a grizzled survivor tasked with transporting Ellie (Ramsey) across the country 20 years after a zombie-like fungus, cordyceps, has wiped out much of civilization. As they continue their journey, the unlikely duo form a surrogate father-daughter bond along the way.
After the show premiered in January 2023, the series was co-created Craig Mazin and game writer and creative director, Neil Druckmann — was renewed for Season 2 after only two of the season’s nine episodes aired.
The second season is expected to follow the plot of the 2020 video game sequel, The Last of Us Part IIwhich picks up a few years after the original story. Although the series has not been picked up for a third season, Mazin previously teased that the show’s team may need more than one season to properly portray Part IIuser events.
“The amount of story left would take us more than a season. But I certainly don’t see it as something that goes on and on and on,” he said Accelerator in January 2023. “We have no such ambitions. Our ambition is to tell a story that exists, as best as possible, in another medium.”
