More than a decade after the hit film was released, a Happy Gilmore the sequel is finally being worked on.
Netflix announced in May 2024 that there would be a Happy Gilmore 2with Adam Sandler he reprized his role.
Released in 1996, the cult classic followed the story of a failed ice hockey player (Sandler) who discovers a talent for golf and competes in a golf tournament to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. She also starred in a sports comedy alongside Sandler Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, Allen Covert, Kevin Nealon, Peter Kelamis, Richard Kiel, Dennis Dugan, Joe Flaherty, Jared Van Snellenberg, Robert Smigel, Will Sasso, Lee Trevino, Bob Barker, Verne Lundquist, Mark Lye, David Kaye, Ian Boothby, Alice Dinnean and Ben Stiller.
In March 2024, McDonald, who played Sandler’s nemesis Shooter McGavin in the film, previously said that Happy Gilmore 2 was in development.
“Here’s a quick message. I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he said ‘McDonald. You’re going to love this,” he said in an interview with 92.3 “The Fan” in Cleveland at the time. “I said, ‘What?’ And he says, ‘What about that? And he shows me the first draft Happy Gilmore 2.”

At the end of the 1996 film, Happy Gilmore (Sandler) uses a trick shot to win the Tour Championship and the golden jacket, ultimately reclaiming his grandmother’s house.
When a sequel was confirmed in May 2024, Netflix shared that Sandler was expected to reprise his role. Three months later, Sandler confirmed and shared the news Travis Kelce it should have been too to join him in the film.
“The whole thing was to get out with Travis. That’s why we put it together,” Sandler said of the film on an August 2024 episode of Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. “We’re going there (to New Jersey). Travis, by the way, thanks, I heard you talk about (Happy Gilmore 2) on your show, you guys.”
The comedian teased that he had a special role planned for the NFL star, but they ultimately decided not to go in that direction.
“We talked about you playing my son when we were writing it, literally, about six months ago,” Sandler continued. “Imagine if Travis was my first child, it would be fun. Just a moron.”
Netflix announced the same month Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald are to return for the sequel. “Shooter McGavin and Virginia Venit please vote green,” Netflix wrote via X in announcing the news. A few minutes later, the streaming service revealed Evil bunny would also join the cast.
In December 2024, Sandler also confirmed the rapper Eminem he was “funny as hell” during his appearance in the film. The Dan Patrick Show.
“Eminem was cool. He came in, he was great,” the actor said at the time, though he did not mention what role the rapper plays in the film. “I’ve known Eminem for a long time, he’s a great guy, he came in and was funny. I think we were with Eminem one day and he was just shooting and shooting and going crazy. He said a million things we can use and a million things we’re glad to have on tape.”
While Netflix has yet to reveal details about what the sequel’s plot will be, Sandler said he’s already working on a script.
“We were jamming and (writing),” he continued to share “The Dan Patrick Show” in April 2024. “We’ve got a million ideas already, we just have to make it into a movie and make sure we’re excited about people enjoying it. we love Happy Gilmore. We don’t want to disappoint anyone.”
“We’re together a lot,” Bowen confirmed during a televised appearance Today show in September, referencing her and Sandler’s characters.
