Opetaia Vs Nyika: “He’s trying to put an end to what I’m trying to do!”

IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia says Davis Nyika is trying to put an end to what he is trying to achieve with his career, and he won’t let him do it on Wednesday night at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach, Australia.

A drained-looking Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) seemed somewhat surprised by the intensity Nyika (10-0, 9 KOs) displayed during their weigh-in showdown. He believes that Nyika, 29, plans everything at home in advance and that is not her style.

The challenger is trying to get an advantage to win his fight because he knows he is facing what many fans believe to be the king of the cruiserweight division. Nyika doesn’t have the experience or hype about her career like Opetaia, but that doesn’t mean she can’t win.

“He’s trying to finish me off.”

She is catching Jai at the ideal time, as she begins to show the strain of making weight and having fought a grueling rematch with former IBF cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis last year in May. Nyika has the size, power and hunger to win this fight if she can beat Opetaia.

“I didn’t expect that either. That was his little one. I know this kid comes home and plans things out in his head about what he’s been saying. Who knows? “I don’t give a damn,” Jai Opetaia told King of Boxing Mediatalking about his confrontation at the weigh-in with David Nyika.

“I never speak ill of anyone. I never talked about anyone. I said I live here. This is what I do. I’m talking about me. I never speak ill of anyone. He’s still a good guy, but very intense. We have a lot of pressure on ourselves.

“This is his chance and he’s trying to put an end to what I’m trying to do. So, everything is at stake. I don’t know, man. It’s strange to hear that,” Opetaia said when told that some people said her ‘aura gives them goosebumps.’

Intimidation aura

Nyika wanted to show that Opetaia did not intimidate him like the others, and that is why he confronted him, letting him know that he came to win this fight. He’s predicting a knockout win and it will be interesting to see if he can pull it off against Jai. Doing so will disrupt Opetaia and his promoter Eddie Hearn’s plans to fight Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and Oleksandr Usyk.

“I’m just focused on myself, trying to win these fights and move forward in life. I hope it gives you goosebumps and makes you get off your ass and do something,” Opetaia said.

“I met Mike Tyson. I respect Mike Tyson too much to propose that, and he gives me goosebumps. So what does that say? So I don’t know what to say,” Opetaia said.
