Jennifer Sey, founder of a sportswear company that champions women’s sports, reacted to a recent critical article from a liberal media outlet by stating that the word “transphobic” means “nothing” to her.
Amid the current controversy over the participation of biological men in women’s sports, Soleil Ho, a columnist and cultural critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote an op-ed lamenting the rise of so-called “anti-trans sportswear.” The article, titled “Is this the next MAGA hat? Transphobic clothing is the new cool,” cited T-shirts that read “Save girls’ sports” and “It’s common sense. XX ≠ XY.”
Sey, a former U.S. gymnastics champion and advocate for female athletes who founded XX-XY Athletics, was slammed in the article for owning “a company whose sole purpose is to produce anti-trans sportswear and fund right-wing influencers.”
Sey originally responded to Ho’s article by jokingly writing an X post: “This article wins for the dumbest thing I’ve read this year so far.” she said Fox News Digital about her work with XX-XY Athletics, promoting it as “the only brand championing the protection of women’s sports and spaces.”

“I was inspired to start XX-XY Athletics because I looked around at all the sports brands that claimed to champion female athletes and ignored this issue that we have right in front of us, which is that more and more men are entering women’s sports.” Sey said. “Not only do we ignore it, but I would say in many cases we are on the wrong side of the issue.”
She also cited how, as a long-time San Francisco resident, she emerged as a leading critic of the area’s local policies beginning in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, sparking controversy that has not earned her the affection from the local liberal media.
“The San Francisco Chronicle likes to troll me a little. They don’t like that I’m so critical of the city, its institutions and its governance,” she recalled. “That said, I’ll take it, you know, if XX-XY athleticism is the ‘new hot’, I think it’s pretty trendy.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Ho for comment.
She went on to address the recent article criticizing her directly.
“The article overall is… I have no other word to describe it other than ‘stupid’ and ‘full of lies,'” he said. “The writer claims that a large number of studies show that sex is a spectrum. That is simply false. There are no studies. She cites no studies. She does not link any studies. There is no evidence that sex is a spectrum. The “Sex is binary. I don’t know how a newspaper can even fact-check it. I know it’s an opinion piece, but I think basic facts shouldn’t be violated in a real newspaper.”

Still, he said, he will gladly accept publicity to boost his business, “and the truth is, it’s good.”
Sey also specifically confronted the writer’s ideology.
“It’s an ideological perspective, it’s activism, it’s not a biological reality,” Sey said, mocking the idea that “‘a person is what they say they are.'”
“That’s simply not true,” Sey responded. “There is a biological reality.”
He was amused by the comparison to the distinctive red “MAGA hats” of Trump supporters.
“Well, MAGA hats are pretty popular,” he said. “I think people use them to make a statement about their values and their stance on the political issues of the day. You know, I think XX-XY Athletics is a statement of a basic truth, a biological truth, and I think it’s becoming “the uniform of common sense and more and more people don’t mind being called “transphobic” for wearing the shirt or “intolerant” for wearing the shirt, because they know that these insults are the province of those who have no argument.”

Its roots in denouncing the invasion of women’s spaces are deep.
“I was the first former elite gymnast to speak out about abuse in sport, emotional, physical and sexual abuse in sport,” she recalled. “So I care deeply about protecting female athletes, and I think this is an important issue within that category. Female athletes deserve to train safely, and they deserve privacy, they deserve justice, and I can’t believe that someone named “A feminist or a women’s rights advocate would not see that the issue here is not based on biological reality, and I will not continue to lie.”
